The Measuring and Recording Student Achievement Steering Group the Burgess Group explored ways in which institutions could express students achievements beyond the simple honours classification. They recommended introducing a single document, to be known as a Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which would be the key vehicle for measuring and recording student achievement. The HEAR will meet the requirements of the Diploma Supplement, include a transcript of students attainments on modules/units and a range of other verifiable information on courses and attainments drawn from a range of institutional sources. Many institutions have developed (or are in the process of developing) their own skills awards and are exploring how these will relate to the HEAR. A group of 18 universities have been involved in piloting the HEAR and a second group is about to commence work. This event will explore progress with the implementation of the HEAR, its relationship to institutional skills awards and the accreditation of formal and informal learning. It will draw on work in SEEC member institutions as well as material from the pilot institutions. Sample HEARs will be explored together with ways in which they are being used to support and record learning. Phil Gravestock, Head of Learning Enhancement and Technology Support, University of Gloucestershire The challenges of implementation Phil will report on the approach being taken at the University of Gloucestershire, one of the 18 pilot institutions to implement a meaningful and verifiable HEAR. Presentations will be followed by a sharing of hopes, fears and experiences of responding to the HEAR in member organisations with a particular focus on what can and cant be credited.
