Credit Beyond Europe

Date: Monday 11 May 2009
Time: 10.00 – 4pm
Location: CEPLW, Centre of Excellence in Professional Learning from the Workplace, University of Westminster, London

Outline

The third in a series of seminars about the internationalisation of academic credit, this time looking beyond the European higher education area, exploring academic relationships and pedagogic cultures.

Effective student mobility within and beyond Europe is subject to many tensions and technicalities, not the least being the ‘struggle to fit’ experienced by the international student.

The day will offer a chance to discuss the mechanisms for the convergence of various academic credit systems, credit size and levels, from the perspectives of East and West, and to concentrate on the experience of supporting students through the dissonance.

Following an update on the workings of the Bologna Group, and an overview of the new Guide to ECTS, we will explore the issues raised by different credit level mechanisms, hear from people who work with student transfer and recognition of international programmes, and then go on to discuss the notion of the various pedagogic cultures that bear on the intricacies of understanding this topic.

The day will be followed by the SEEC European Credit Network Group Spring meeting, to share news and plan the next academic year’s programme, including the development of online conferencing and publications.

Presentations from the day will be published on the SEEC website.
